It's mostly white people that have all the problems with the names. Guilt and all, you know. On our reservation in eastern NC, we are "Cherokee Indians". Just thought I could perhaps assuage your non-native guilty conscience. Your child (vis a vis her superior) was in fact, correct. Just thought I would clarify for you…while some prefer Native American, others prefer Indian and still others prefer American Indian. It's a mistake that should have been corrected years ago and yet people persist while thinking it's a problem like black/african american. I'm not usually bothered by these sort of things, but this one just irks me. My son is in kindergarten and they taught him the short i sound using the word indian as referring to a native american. I'm trying to contact the publishers of the school books to let them know I don't appreciate their encouraging this mistake's continuation on the next generation. Okay, rant enough. Get better soon.
